This Hollywood super-stylist has a sideline in shoe design

Kate Young, the woman behind the wardrobes of Sienna Miller and Dakota Johnson, has a hack to make even the deadliest stilettos achievable at a (Hollywood) party. Get ready: the celebrity dresser recommends applying CBD cream to the soles due to its numbing properties which, in turn, prevent swelling. But Young won’t need anti-inflammatory dyes for the new shoes in his own socket. Its line of clogs and heeled sandals for Ilio Smeraldo are as comfortable as one would expect from a woman who has a sideline in solutions for sore feet.

Young stumbled across the Florence-based brand on Instagram, as is often the case with stylists looking for new brands to give their clients an edge. She immediately fell for Italian know-how, but it was the “sorority values” that convinced her to commit. Ilio Smeraldo invites industry insiders, such as Laura Bailey, Rebecca Corbin-Murray and Insta’s favorite 50-something Grece Ghanem, to nominate the shoe designs that are missing from their own closets, then has them take care of his Tuscan artisans. “Strong personalities who come together for a good cause, supporting the Fondazione Fiorenzo Fratinigot a “yes” from Young.

The clog was a no-brainer for Kate, who lives with relatives from the Birkenstock family. “The clog has the ease of a slipper but the scale gives it a more sneaker-like attitude,” she explains. “I love the white style with high waisted pleated pants, or knit dresses. Black is super versatile and replaces my black winter boot during the day, and finally I really like brown with cream or denim.

The criss-cross heel is based on Young’s search for “something super minimal that would also be comfortable and chic.” The soft elastic, which can be twisted in different ways to create different looks, means the straps won’t cut into the foot – a game changer for anyone who’s endured the pain of thin leather straps that cut and blister. Detailed with a “smeraldo” – a small emerald – on the sole of the shoes, these heels are perfect for minimalists, like Kate, who appreciate hardworking accessories rather than “look at me” varieties.

The key to the success of minimalist shoes à la Young? “I tend to favor simple lines, but the proportion and shape really have to be perfect if there’s no embellishment,” she says. Expect fellow slip-on enthusiast Sienna to try out the Kate Young X Ilio Smeraldo clogs first. The sandals? Maybe Margot Robbie or Michelle Williams. The super-stylist has a captive audience.
