The United States is arguably the best place in the world for aspiring business owners who want to get rich. More than 700 billionaires live in America, representing more than a quarter of all billionaires in the world, according to the most recent data from Forbes.
Business owners across the country have succeeded and become incredibly wealthy – 42 of the 50 states are home to at least one billionaire. Even in states without billionaires, there are residents worth hundreds of millions of dollars.
To determine the richest person in each state, 24/7 Wall St. looked at the Forbes list. Richest billionaire of all states 2022. The net worths listed are as of March 2022, except for the seven states that had no billionaires, for which the data is for the most recent year available.
The wealthiest people in each state amassed their fortunes in different ways. The list includes billionaires who made their money in technology, healthcare, consumer goods, investments, clothing and more. Some of the entries are household names, well known for being among the wealthiest people in the world, while others are not so familiar.
Many of the people on this list made their money in a business synonymous with the state where they live, such as farming in Iowa, mining in Montana, and oil and gas in Oklahoma. It is the most emblematic work of each state.
Although many billionaires are titans of the industry, a large portion have done nothing to earn their money. Many of them have inherited their wealth from a relative or spouse, or have taken over a family business that has flourished for generations.
