Schreiben kann man lernen: As a book concerned primarily with screenwriting, it ignores the stuff of most books aimed at fiction writers: My only complaint about The Anatomy of Story is that lots of the examples detailed, while classics, are quite old. Truby illustrates the importance of setting to the story and how careful plotting is needed to weave the elements of the story together. This book is, by far, the best book ever written on the subject of how to tell a story. Maybe it was just too many dry passages of abstract discussion that was mostly meaningless.

However, it does not seem like that’s what Truby thinks it’s supposed to be.

I didn’t find much. Truby recognizes this and does an even better job of explaining it. A better writer wouldn’t have picked on Mark Twain as a negative example. Maybe success is gained by following templates, but I have a feeling that more is achieved by breaking the mold.

And most of it isn’t dry, or too abstract, or meaningless.

One of the greatest things for me, however, was that this book taught me how to outline my book based on character change and development, rather than on action itself. Fabulously insightful, practical, anwtomy guide to storytelling.

Okay, finished this beast I had yet to understand that aligning plot, subplot, character, story world, and a lot of other elements, would save me a lot of time and energy in revisions.

But something tells me I don’t need to This is a more accessible and user friendly spin off Robert McKee’s book on the craft. I mean, dig a little deeper, why don’t you, Truby? As I get better at writing I’m sure I’ll learn how to bend the rules and change the formula to suit me, but this is a really excellent start for getting the feel of writing good stories.

Has Truby written anything as good? Lf had a new idea for a novel but no plan about how to execute it. John Truby begins this book by simultaneously praising and denouncing Aristotle’s Poetics.
