It does have a happy ending, but that is to be expected. You could feel what the characters are feeling.
It also invites literary analysis of theme, motif, char I had my doubts about this book in the beginning, especially at the point where Joseph makes an almost ludicrous and highly unlikely teh, but the book gets better.

It was followed by several more adventure stories of treasure and spies. The phrase – ‘Never judge a book by its cover’ proves correct!
The characters are all well developed from the children themselves to the various characters they meet on their journey.

InWarsaw was liberated by the Russians, but there was still no news of Edek’s whereabouts or of the children’s parents. After fleeing the prison, Joseph arrives at a house in a nearby village and takes refuge with an elderly couple living there. Because I ended up really enjoying travelling the journey of the war stricken world with Jan and the Seraillier. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

It is a great book to use to introduce children to WWII, as this book portrays the challenging reality of the war and its refugees without the graphic violence and abject horror of more recent works.
As long as the children have the sword, they will manage to escape Poland and arrive in Switzerland safely. I picked this copy up again as a gift for my son, hoping that he would enjoy it as much as I had.
