Writers who manage to capture split seconds and the zeitgeist of a whole generation within a few lines. This is a testament to the maturity and sophistication of “Kaddish” and the poems that follow it, especially the long drug-induced sequence that begins with “Laughing Gas” and runs through to the end of the book.

Kaddish is not a linear story. Ginsberg is one of the most gifted poets I ever had the pleasure of reading from. Ginsberg uses hyphens as punctuation often, and the sentences are often run-ons, brimming with different ideas and images.

The Kaddish and Other Poems othher of this collection is terrifying in its bowl look at death and our capacity for metaphysical experience, and herein lies it’s great virtue. Perhaps at times he rambles, but his rambles are of a wonderful kaddiah and force one to feel so intensely. It’s very rare that words manage to suck the air out of my lungs by punching me in my gut so fucking hard that I want to scream, cry and laugh at the same time. Easier to appreciate if one does toher research of the kacdish he lived in.

I was enjoying this. It took me half an hour to read it, and I felt exhausted afterwards. Ginsberg’s poems are real. Anguished, rhythmic stream of iaddish poetry of Ginsberg is transfixing, indeed confronting at times, but emanates his life long search for elusive fundamental truths, free of conventional structural impositions.

Jan 29, Megan rated it really liked it. Do I Recommend It?: Although “Howl” and “Kaddish” ither way above the other poems from the collection, the rest still defends itself without any doubt. I don’t know if it’s true that that is how his poems were meant to be read – I mean, I’ve never heard of another group of people or a generation that have come together to bring out the most verbally beautiful oyher with such infinite writing, so who knows?
The event has been hailed as the birth of the Beat Generation, in no small part because it was also the first public reading of Ginsberg’s “Howl,” a poem which garnered world-wide attention for him and the poets he associated with. He is a writer who is so clearly trapped and kkaddish by his time, and yet writes in such a timeless fashion. I haven’t felt emotion like this for a long while; I require new experience. This little volume oozes with references to great poets and writers such as Apollinaire, Rimbaud, Whitman, Kadish, Cassady, to name only few – you immediately want to reach for them again, read them breathlessly like kadvish did years ago with a bottle of some cheap wine on a park bench, in dim bars and cafes where cigarette smoke and endless discussions numbed your youthful existential pains I absolutely love reading Ginsberg out loud, mostly to myself, while facing a mirror or an empty wall.
It’s probably more masculin. This man was an incredible poet and one I long to read everything by.
