It’s a lightly fictionalized memoir of Gao’s experiences in the Chinese Cultural Revolution roughly to Mao’s death in Not the China of the formidable military capabilities, an expanding GDP and the significant strides in space science. I have read quite a bit of Chinese and Chinese-American fiction involving Mao Tse-tung, but none has driven home the cruelties and absurdities of the Cultural Revolution better than Gao Xingjian’s dreamlike narrative.

A wonderful chapter towards the end of the book where it begins with the character being written about in the third person arguing the author must put an end to zingjian one way or another, immediately. Of course people became more and more selfish and betrayed friends and family often, just trying to keep alive. The rambling in between the actual story left me not perplexed about the essential meaning of life or politics.
