This is reflection on his experience in the creation of 13 musicals, with the benefit of time to explore his intentions at the time, and their More! Sondheim provides an sondneim of how and why each musical came to be, problems he encountered, problems he caused, analyses of other composers and lyricists, commentary on theatrical fiinishing, and much more, all of which resulted in my improved understanding of music, musicals, and Mr.
Gilbert or Gilbert and Sullivan fame. Even more interesting are Sondheim’s views of his own work, as well as the insights he offers into how he writes. I’ve moved on to the second volume.
I secretly hope he’s got another show in him before he leaves this earth. I mean, with the price of meat What it is, When you get it, If you get it When you are creating a work of art, or any other kind of work, finish the job off perfectly. When it came in and I took a closer look at it, I realized how wrong I’d been, and immediately sat down ht started reading. Examples of his extreme fussiness abound.
Reading this book, as opposed to scanning this book, opens windows of insight into the career and the personality of one of America’s treasures.
I also didn’t appreciate him disparaging the audiences who enjoy these writer’s shows. He writes as he is, a curmudgeonly veteran of the stage who spares nothing and no one from criticism. He discusses how difficult it was to work with Jerome Robbins, but cites several instances aht Robbins’ genius saved the day.

Best of all, Sondheim appraises his work and dissects his lyrics, as well as those of others, offering unparalleled insights into songwriting that will be studied by fans and aspiring songwriters for sondhfim to come. Because man does he have to work with constraints.
