More often than not, he ends up taking Duchamp’s own explanations at face value, a very dodgy procedure. This is the best Duchamp bio. I wholeheartedly recommend this wonderful book to everyone who knows how to read English. In Duchamp, Tomkins has found a biographer’s greatest challenge — a subject of such wide ranging intellect that the biographer must himself possess great intelligence and imagination in order cqlvin grasp the implications of the ideas which he’s outlining.
