Broken Juliet (Starcrossed, #2) by Leisa Rayven

The emotions between the characters were superb. The new hottest book couple! Every page is charged with off-the-charts chemistry. Don’t miss this exciting debut. This is a romance that you feel with all your heart and soul. Ethan and Cassie’s chemistry was off-the-charts and their connection so intense that it kept my heart racing the whole way through.

Broken Juliet

The writing captured the emotional intensity of their epic love while balancing it out with hilarious scenes that had me laughing out loud, and other scenes that had me fanning myself from the hotness. It was the perfect balance! And I can’t recommend it highly enough.

The heroine is infused with the perfect amount of believable hopefulness and charm. She is fully-fleshed out and possesses a sense of humor that is wry and witty And the hero is perfectly drawn.

The reader may want to throttle him for a sizable portion of the text. They will equally want to make out with him. And that dichotomy is perfect for a New Adult hero.

He is wonderful and believably bad for her in all the best ways. There’s drama, angst, humor, and sexy, sexy romance.

I wholeheartedly recommend Bad Romeo o those who enjoy contemporary romance with some angst, but the promise of humor and swoons to smooth the way. The mixture is straight-up perfect. Especially when you add in all the sexual tension. And my god, there was sexual tension.

I swooned, I laughed, and I had those sweet chills up my spine from the intensity of two lovers approaching a second chance at romfo things right. There isn’t a single thing I didn’t like about this amazing, fantastic read. The attraction between the protagonists is so palpable, I could almost taste it.

If you like unforgettable romance stories, believe me, you do not want to miss this one! It has a fair share of rauven and heartbreak, but the dialogue is sprinkled with sharp, witty, absolutely hilarious banter, which assists in giving dimension to the story. Bad Romeo concluded with a cliffhanger, but happily, Broken Juliet ties off the story arcs in fine fashion, leaving this reader very satisfied.

What Ethan does to win Cassie back is definitely sigh-worthy – he proves he’s the good Romeo she deserves. This book and Bad Romeo are keepers. Bad Romeo is her first novel. Gaviotas: A Village to Reinvent the World by Alan Weisman

Veteran journalist Alan Weisman was part of a team assigned by National Public Radio to document possible solutions to the world’s greatest environmental crises. Reinevnt search led to war-torn, drug-ravaged Colombia, where he’d heard about the miracle of Gaviotas.

He found a symbol of hope and triumph amidst a perilous world, and kept returning to chronicle its story.

Alan Weisman is the author of La Frontera: The United States Border with Mexico. He lives in Sonoita, Arizona.

A true, hope-inspiring utopia for the next millennium, Gaviotas is a completely self-sufficient community in the middle of the roughest terrain in the Colombian savanna. Journalist Weisman’s study of the society over the last quarter of a century is a celebration of the people, the advances, and the vision for the future. At the center of this community is Paolo Lugari, a true visionary who recruits engineers, scientists, and gzviotas to create, over time, a jungle society that utilizes its rain forests without destroying them, operates a fully equipped hospital and other services strictly through the use of solar energy, and fights off the challenges of the elements, the terrain, and the political chaos of Colombia.

Page after page is loaded with the innovations of the thinkers and doers of Gaviotas, and author Weisman divides the book into three categories: Reviewed April 15, Joe Collins.

In the early s, a unique community was founded in the los llanos region of Colombia. Located north of the Amazon rain forest, this region is an expansive savannah, sorld populated and generally considered uninhabitable.

Gaviotas originated out of the belief that the current state of urban expansion and poverty and the continued depletion of natural nonrenewable resources could not be reinvenf and that the future required people to learn how to live in harsh, inhospitable environments and to do so in an ecologically sound and sustainable manner.

Journalist Weisman tells the story of a remarkable and diverse group of individuals engineers, biologists, botanists, agriculturists, sociologists, musicians, artists, doctors, teachers, and students who helped the village evolve into a very real, socially viable, and self-sufficient community for the future.

The people of Gaviotas today produce innovative technologies solar collectors, irrigation systems, windmills, and hydroponic gardens that use the environment villgae depleting or destroying it.

While some of their creative endeavors have not succeeded, even the failures tend gaviotzs spawn ideas for future successes.

Weisman does a fine job of detailing Gaviotas’s evolution and placing it within the larger global historical context. The story he presents is wonderful testament to human creativity, commitment, and effort toward building a socially viable and environmentally sustainable future. Thank you for using the catalog.

Fault tree analysis FTA is a top-down, deductive failure analysis in which an undesired state of a system is analyzed using Boolean logic to combine a series of lower-level 6105. This analysis method is mainly used in the fields of safety engineering and reliability engineering to understand how systems can fail, to identify the isc ways to reduce risk or to determine or get a feeling for event rates of a safety accident or a particular system level functional failure. FTA is used in the aerospace[1] nuclear powerchemical and process[2] [3] [4] pharmaceutical[5] petrochemical and other high-hazard industries; but is also used in fields as diverse as risk factor identification relating to social service system failure.

These conditions are classified by the severity of their effects. The most severe conditions require the most extensive fault tree analysis. These system failure conditions and their classification are often previously determined in the functional hazard analysis. Watson, under a U.

Subsequently, within the U. Inthe U. This change adopted failure probability criteria for aircraft systems and equipment and led to widespread use of FTA in civil aviation.

Inthe FAA published Order Early in the Apollo project the question was asked about the probability of successfully sending astronauts to the moon and returning them safely to Earth.

A risk, or reliability, calculation of some sort was performed and the result was a mission success probability that was unacceptably low. This result discouraged NASA from further quantitative risk or reliability analysis until after the Challenger accident in After the Challenger accident, the importance of probabilistic risk assessment PRA and FTA in systems risk and reliability analysis was realized and its use at NASA has begun to grow and now FTA is considered as one of the most important system reliability and safety analysis techniques.

Within the idc power industry, the U. Today FTA is widely used in system safety and reliability engineeringand 61205 all major fields of engineering. Any sufficiently complex system is subject to failure as a result of one or more subsystems failing. The likelihood of failure, however, can often be reduced through improved system design. Fault tree analysis maps the relationship between faults, subsystems, and redundant safety design elements by creating a logic diagram of the overall system.

The undesired outcome is taken as the root ‘top event’ of a tree of logic.

For instance the undesired outcome of a metal stamping press operation is a human appendage being stamped. Working backward from this top event we might determine there are two ways this could happen: This condition is a logical OR. Considering the branch of occurring during normal operation perhaps we determine there are two ways this could happen: 6102 is another logical OR.

We can make a design improvement by requiring the operator to press two buttons to cycle the machine—this is a safety feature in the form of a logical AND. The button may have an intrinsic failure rate—this becomes a fault stimulus we can analyze. When fault trees are labeled with actual numbers for failure probabilities, computer programs can calculate failure probabilities from fault trees.

When a specific event is found to have more than one effect event, i.

Fault tree analysis – Wikipedia

Graphically speaking, it means this event will appear at several locations in the tree. Common causes introduce dependency relations between events. The probability computations of a tree which contains some common causes are much more complicated than regular trees where all events are considered as independent.

Not all software tools available on the market provide such capability. The tree is usually written out using conventional logic gate symbols. A cut set is a combination of events, 61205 component failures, causing the top event. If no event can be removed from a cut set without causing the top event, then it is called a minimal cut set. Some industries use both fault trees and event trees see Probabilistic Risk Assessment.

An event tree starts from an undesired initiator loss of critical supply, component failure etc. As each new event is considered, a new node on the tree is added with a split of probabilities of taking either branch. The probabilities of a range of ‘top events’ arising from the initial event can then be seen.

Government to evaluate the 6125 and reliability of nuclear reactorsthe Space Shuttleand the Iiec Space Station. Outside the US, the software RiskSpectrum is a popular tool for fault tree and event irc analysis, and is licensed for use at almost half of the world’s nuclear power plants for probabilistic safety assessment.

The basic symbols used in FTA are grouped as events, gates, and transfer symbols. Minor variations may be used in FTA ieec. Event symbols are used for primary events and intermediate events. Primary events are not further developed on the fault tree. Intermediate events are found at the output of a gate. The event symbols are shown below:. An intermediate event gate can be used immediately above a primary event to provide more room to type 61205 event description.

Gate symbols describe the relationship between input and output events. The symbols are derived from Boolean logic ieec. Transfer symbols are used to connect the inputs and outputs of related fault trees, such as the fault tree of a subsystem to its system. Events in a fault tree are associated with statistical probabilities.

A fault tree is often normalized to a given time interval, such as a flight hour or an average mission uec. Event probabilities depend on the relationship of the event hazard function to this interval. Unlike conventional logic gate diagrams in which inputs and outputs hold the binary values of TRUE 1 or FALSE 0the gates in a fault tree output probabilities related to the set operations of Boolean logic. The probability of a gate’s output event depends on the input event probabilities.

An AND gate represents a combination of independent events. That is, the probability of any input event to an AND gate is unaffected by any other input event to the same gate. In set theoretic terms, this is equivalent to the intersection of the input event sets, and the probability idc the AND gate output is given by:.

Since failure probabilities on fault trees tend to be small less than. An exclusive OR gate with two inputs represents the probability that one or the other input, but not both, occurs:. Many different approaches can be used to model a FTA, but the most common and popular way can be summarized in a few steps. A single fault tree is used to analyze one and only one undesired event or top event, which may be subsequently fed into another fault tree as a basic event.

Though the nature of the undesired event may 610255 dramatically, a FTA follows the same procedure for any undesired event; be it a delay of 0. Due to labor cost, FTA is normally only performed for more serious undesired events.

FTA is a deductivetop-down method aimed at analyzing the effects of initiating faults and events on a complex iecc. This contrasts with failure mode and effects analysis FMEAwhich is an inductivebottom-up analysis method aimed at analyzing the effects of single component or function failures on equipment or subsystems. FTA is very good at showing how resistant a system is to single or multiple initiating faults. It is not good at finding all possible initiating faults.

FMEA is good at exhaustively cataloging initiating faults, and identifying their local effects. It is not good at examining multiple failures or their effects at a system level. A dependence diagram is equivalent to a success tree analysis STAthe logical inverse of an FTA, and depicts the system using paths instead of gates.

DD and STA produce probability of success i. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article needs additional citations for verification. Please help improve this article by adding ifc to reliable sources.

Carol Tavris expertly examines every facet of that fascinating emotion—from genetics to stress to the rage for justice. Fully revised and updated, Anger: The Misunderstood Emotion now includes: Should testosterone or PMS excuse rotten tempers or aggressive actions? She was senior editor for several years of a then-new magazine, Psychology Today, and went on to develop a career as a teacher, lecturer, and psychology writer. Sex Differences in Perspective and an introductory textbook, Psychology.

You have not mas –” “Ah, but I have,” the Swami interrupts. Let me tell you a story. As the incidents increased, everyone became fearful, and many refused to go to the temple.

The Swami who was the master at the temple was aware of the problem and took it upon himself to put tavrris end to it. Taking himself to where the carlo dwelt, he used a mantram to call the snake to him and bring it into submission.

The Swami then said to the snake that it was wrong to anver the people who walked along the path to worship and made him promise sincerely that he would never do it again.

Soon it happened that the snake was seen by a passerby upon the path, and it made no move to bite him. Then it became known that the snake had somehow been made passive and people grew unafraid. It was not long before the village boys were dragging the poor snake along behind them as they ran laughing here and there.

When the temple Swami passed that way again he called the snake to see if he had kept his promise. The snake humbly and miserably approached the Swami, who exclaimed, ‘You are bleeding. Tell me how this has come to be. It csrol an understandable mistake, for ambivalence about anger permeates our society. Once tacris to be a destructive emotion that should be suppressed at all costs, anger is now widely thought to be a healthy emotion that costs too much when it is suppressed.

In the abrupt transition from Puritan restraint to liberated self-expression, many people are uncertain about how to behave: Some overreact angrily at every thwarted wish, others suffer injustice tavfis silence. We are told in one breath not to rock the boat, and in the next that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Some people take a dose of anger like a purgative, to cleanse the system; others dread any ripple on their natural placidity and fear the loss of control that the demon anger, tvris the demon rum, might bring.

One friend of mine, a forty-year-old businesswoman, illustrates perfectly our culture’s conflict about anger.

She won’t express feelings of ire, she said, unless she is really “boiling. Or open warfare — very frightening. There’s a fear that once you start screaming at people you’ll end up like one of those hollerers on Forty-second Street. If you start, where’s it going to stop? When you express anger, the person receiving it doesn’t simply say, ‘Point well taken! Anger lust sits there, like tavvris uncooked doughnut.

Clark Kent never really gets angry at injustice, merely impatient: When David Banner gets angry, he becomes, uncontrollably, a giant green id, a bilious beast.

Questions?

He is not a man at all, super or otherwise. These incarnations of anger represent dual attitudes: Is it under our control, or do we have as much chance of telling it what to do as of regulating the carotid artery? Is it a human blessing, or a bestial sin? The Bible does not answer, now recommending the furious smiting of the unjust, then the ameliorative turning of cheeks. Although my friend occasionally berates herself for her ambivalence about anger — and spends a lot of time in therapy trying to “resolve her feelings” — she is in fact part of a long and noble debate in Western tradition.

Carol Tavris – Wikipedia

In the eighth century B. When the Greek King Agamemnon appropriates Briseis, a girl whom Achilles has won in battle, Achilles’ masculine pride is wounded. Stifling his angry impulses to kill Agamemnon at once, Achilles retreats to sulk in his tent and pamper his rage.

But Achilles feels better about sulking than my friend does. When the servant is found murdered, Qvist is arrested; and the trial that ensues for him is both legal and spiritual.

At last, although he knows he is innocent of the deed, Qvist convicts himself of the desire. He remembers an earlier time when anger had defeated him, an experience that I expect is familiar tavriw modern readers: No sooner did he feel himself alone than his anger disappeared.

His bones seemed to turn to water, and a most awful sickness took possession of him.

Anger, the misunderstood emotion – Carol Tavris – Google Books

He sank to his knees, shaking, and covered his face with his hands This anger, which came upon him so suddenly and with such absolute power, had been the greatest trial of his life. Memories rushed upon him. The face of a young German student, blond, caril, and opinionated, rose before him.

He felt again the sword in his hand, and in his heart the furious desire which had possessed him to kill that young man. The reason for the quarrel escaped him. Two more unlike stories you could not find, for the anger that is sweet to one hero is anathema to the other; Achilles nurses his anger and Qvist curses his; one uses his anger and the other feels used by it. Over the centuries, the pendulum of opinion has slowly swung to the Qvistian position, a result of profound changes in our attitudes about the nature of humankind.

About as soon as man could think, he thought thinking was superior to feeling. I use the word “man” advisedly, and not generically, either. I’m afraid man also thought thinking was not a female capacity. The battle lines were drawn early for what Pascal would call the “internal war” between reason and emotion, and for most of our history a brave confidence in reason prevailed.

Reason, or at least religious faith, gave man a fighting chance to control anger, pride, lust, covetousness, envy, gluttony, sloth, and any other deadly sin that happens to be his weakness; philosophers and theologians sought to distinguish man from beast, and from woman, by praising his intelligence, rationality, and upright posture in both the moral and vertical meanings of “upright”.

And so, for most of the twenty-five hundred years since Plato, the healthy individual was someone who did not fly off the handle, who was not, in Hamlet’s felicitous phrase, passion’s slave. Far from advising emotional self-expression, our predecessors came down firmly on behalf of self-control: Hesitation is the best cure for anger The first blows of anger are heavy, but if it waits, it will think again.

Seneca In the march towards Truth, anger, selfishness, hatred, etc. A man who is swayed by passions may have good enough intentions, may be truthful in word, but he will never find the Truth. Gandhi To behave rightly, we ourselves should never lay a hand on our servants as long as our anger lasts Things will truly seem different to us when we have quieted and cooled down. Montaigne The principal use of prudence, of self-control, is that it teaches us to be masters of our passions, and to so control and guide them that the evils which they cause are quite bearable, and that we even derive joy from them all.

Descartes Short temper is a loss of face.

Whereas Plato assured us that reason ego could control our worst impulses, Freud and his followers bet gloomily on the id, on the sway of instinct. Plato and his intellectual heirs tried to show that man was better than beast; Darwin showed that man was just another species of beast, and many of his successors now argue that most beasts are wiser caorl kinder caroll man.

Popular ethologists students of animal behavior such as Konrad Lorenz, Robert Ardrey, and Desmond Morris and lately the sociobiologists such as E. Wilson make an impassioned case that man is not a reasonable creature. Because the legacy of Darwin and Freud has so profoundly shaped contemporary attitudes about anger, I would like to offer a few reminders of tavriss they did, and did not, have to say about this powerful emotion.

I do not wish to imply a “great man” theory of angr change here. It takes countless intellectual contributions to chip away at an establishment view of the world, before it falls; and although Darwin and Freud are the best examples of the theories they promoted, they were by no means the only ones.

Further, scientific and theoretical ideas must fall on fertile ground if they are to take root, and the social and economic conditions of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries have surely buffeted human self-confidence, making the world ready for evolution and psychoanalysis. But Freud’s and Darwin’s theories represent a crucial pivot point in Western thought: A baby bird, struggling from its nest, has made its way to a precarious perch on her clothesline.

Terrified equally of flying and falling, it does angdr budge, but whimpers piteously. The anber, chirping her support and encouragement, shows her baby how to take off, flutter around, and land. No luck; baby doesn’t move. The mother becomes chirpier.
