Builders’ Merchants News – Volunteer walkers hike 90 miles along Hadrian’s Wall to raise over £20,000 for building charity

A group of 13 volunteers undertook and completed the iconic Hadrian’s Wall Walk to raise funds for UK building association Band of Builders.

The team tackled the path to Hadrian’s Wall – 84 miles (135 km) from Wallsend, Newcastle upon Tyne in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in Cumbria on the west coast – adding some miles along the way to reach a total of 90 miles over four days.

The team, supported by two support drivers, covered over 20 miles a day, braving sweltering heat, downpours, blisters and injuries to raise over £20,000 for Band of Builders, a registered charity created to help members of the UK construction industry struggling with illness or injury.

The charity is about to start work on its 26th project, which takes place in the north of Ireland, and has more in the pipeline throughout 2022, as well as a health initiative mind named The Big Brew.

Band of Builders fundraising coordinator Martin O’Donnell led the team on the challenge. He said: “Most people tackle Hadrian’s Wall in six or seven days, so completing it in four days was no small feat.

“We’ve had a lot of ups and downs along the way, but everyone agreed blisters, injuries and long days are worth doing our part to help others when they need it. There’s still time to sponsor us as we aim to make this BoB’s biggest fundraiser yet.

BoB is not only supported by tradespeople across the UK, but also by big names in the construction industry including DEWALT, Jewson, Gibbs & Dandy, V12 Footwear, Talasey, Resideo and Haemmerlin.

The Hadrian’s Wall team included a group of eight DEWALT volunteers, who are matching their fundraiser to add even more money to the pot, and four Talasey volunteers also joined the group for a day of challenge.

The band as a whole have raised just over £20,000 so far and want to increase that total, which will go towards future Band of Builders projects to help crafters where needed.

Aimee Cooper, Senior eCommerce & Digital Manager at DEWALT, said, “Our team is always inspired by the amazing people at BoB and the work they do to support members of the construction community. When we shared the opportunity to participate in the Hadrian’s Wall walk with our teams, we received a fantastic response!

“As a group, we have all come together and supported each other through the toughest challenges and times, with the ambition to make this BoB the biggest fundraising event yet!”
