Barchowsky Fluent Handwriting is an italic script developed in the late 20th century by Nan Jay Barchowsky, similar to the Getty-Dubay script. BFH letters taught to beginners evolve seamlessly into joined-up true cursive writing. In it Nicole Kidman plays the writer Virginia Woolf.

Getty-Dubay books were previously published by Portland State University and are now self-published by the authors and Allport Editions. I’m not sure how I feel about the price–it sounds high, but it’s probably comparable to other complete programs out there.

The cursive method is used with a number of alphabets due to its improved writing speed and infrequent pen lifting. We have been reviewing three products from Barchowsky Fluent Handwriting. We use the suggested little chants things like “down, bounce up, down, bounce up” to get the feel of the letters, and we’re just working through them, one per lesson.
Those people who are handwritten letter snobs never get anything in the mail from me. Now each evening I write up to two pages for a diary entry, with a fountain pen, and although not anything flash. Before the advent of chip and pin I did have to sign my name, but that is more bwrchowsky hieroglyph than writing.
But it was time to try again.

Getty-Dubay is a modern version of Italic script developed in by Barbara Getty and Inga Dubay to ease the transition to cursive.

No other payment was made. Conventional cursive demands no pen lifts within words, difficult unless one writes with whole arm movement; the ring and little fingers riding along the desk or paper. I did however find that cursive was easier to write with a fountain pen.
We’re a bit beyond the suggested cornmeal and shaving cream activities, but they’d be helpful with younger ones. Then we were taught joined up writing. This typography -related article is a stub. Conventional cursive is taught in later grades. The book itself contains lots of ideas and examples for continuing handwriting practice, which will probably make more sense once you’ve gotten started.
Since hzndwriting advent of reasonably priced laptops and my diagnosis with RA, I write only to sign my name. The Apprentice had been asking me if I could find her something that would help her write her high barhcowsky notes faster and clearer, and this sounded like a good possibility.
And who’s to say that every letter in a word has to be hooked up to every other letter? I have to say that Barchowsky isn’t an open-the-book-and-teach program.
There is also some effort underway to add Graphite support to OpenOffice. I wish Crayons would have had the chance to start it a couple of years ago, but since she is still only partway through learning the “regular” cursive letters, I don’t think she’ll have a problem trying to relearn some of them–and in fact, the hard ones are the ones that Barchowsky simplifies like lower-case S.
There are also some special behaviors that automate the typesetting of radical square root expressions and long division. I therefore spent my college years printing so that I could decipher my own notes.
Graphite is an open-source technology that implements smart fonts along the same lines as AAT and OpenType, but in a more powerful and extensible way. It is important to note that the Barchowsky Fluent Hand font is a model, and not an end unto itself.
