I have read this book twice so far. The writing is crisp, descriptive and evocative but oh, so sad. I have neither perfect pitch nor a head for mathematics, and anyway who wants to compute the speed of history?

What had happened all those years ago that affected their angle of repose? Stegner has some profound tsegner to say about it. For me, it took a while for this novel to reach a certain momentum as the author introduces the reader to the narrator, Lyman Ward. Another is that it was rough, ready, and amgle, and ribald about anything not as unkempt as itself, whereas in fact there was never a time or place where gentility, reposf female gentility, was more respected.

Oliver not so much interested in making a fortune as in making a mark, a contribution to the development of the West, a contribution for which he would be remunerated only fairly, and a contribution which would be acknowledged by others. This is my favorite line, coming much later in the book than I remember from the last time I read it. Susan is more talented in many ways than Oliver.

It’s going over his grandmother’s life that starts him to bring his own into the equation, with a grown son who he may not see often, an ex-wife who he definitely does not want to see and little in the way of friends apart from those who help him around the house he is quite a lonely person where it seems looking into the past is his only way to find solace.

Stegner unraveled the ties that sustained a marriage of a seemingly incompatible couple. Aside from his scholarly work which consists of composing a og from his grandmother’s letters, published writings, and newspaper clippings, Ward spends his time on daily exercise, conversing with his summer secretary Ada’s daughter Shelly Rasmussenand watching baseball with the Hawkes family.

By the end of the novel, has Lyman reached his own Angle of Repose? One of my all favorite books! Stegner received most of his education in Utah, graduating from the University in Thus, both the author and the reader know that her fate is already set reposd though as the protagonist, she does not know it.
